A cycle ride starting in the vibrant city of Brighton which takes you through the stunning landscape of  East Sussex, including the spectacular cliffs of the Seven Sisters, and  onto the outer reaches of Kent,  ‘England's garden’, and finally into the beautiful and historic towns and villages of West Sussex. A  world of simple, bright elements, green land, white cliffs, deep blue sea, passing the famous Ashdown Forest, home of Winnie the Pooh. Cycling is paths, bridle ways and quiet roads

Brighton to Polegate

The 19 miles to the rolling hills and stunning views of Seven Sisters is easy cycling along cycle paths and quiet roads. The beautiful and ancient village of Alfriston with its quaint houses and romantic teashops is a further 3 miles along the Cuckmere Valley. A further 7- 8 miles along quiet roads and you arrive at Polegate, the start of the famous Cuckoo trail.

POLEGATE TO GROOMBRIDGE

From Polegate, you can enjoy 12 miles of  picturesque  and traffic free cycling on the Cuckoo trail with its abundance of wildlife and fauna.  You leave the Cuckoo trail at Heathfield and then cycle 10 miles, including a few climbs, but are rewarded with a string of enchanting  villages and some delightful views. At the lovely village of Groombridge with its village bakery and two pubs, you reach the Forest Way.

Groombridge to Horsham

The Forest way is a 10-mile scenic trail going through rolling wooded countryside. At East Grinstead a similar trail, Worth Way, takes you around the outskirts of Crawley before riding along country roads to the historic town of Horsham.

Horsham to Brighton

From Horsham, you join the south section of the Downs link which takes in the stunning beauty of Southwater country park, along the pretty meandering River Adur, to the ancient ruins of Bramber Castle, and then back to Brighton via Shoreham on sea.

2-day itinerary

Cycling this trail in two days is a challenge, and requires good trail and weather conditions. However, there are good train routes along the way and we can provide additional transfers.

  • Day 1 Brighton to Groombridge (63 miles)
  • Day 2 Groombridge to Brighton (54 miles)

3-day itinerary

Cycling this trail in 3 days is an enjoyable challenge and gives you time to stop and appreciate the sweeping sea, beautiful countryside, and pretty towns and villages that you pass through.

Day 1 Brighton to Mayfield  or Rotherfield (43/46 miles)
Day 2 Mayfield or Rotherfield to Horsham (45 miles)
Day 3 Horsham to Brighton ( 36 miles)

4-day itinerary

Four days allows you to cycle at a more leisurely pace and have time to explore some of the beautiful places that you pass along the way with extra opportunities to soak up the local culture and appreciate the natural and historical wonders.  Groombridge is only 5 miles from the delightful and historic city of Tunbridge Wells in Kent, (known as  the garden of England), so an excursion there is definitely recommended if you choose this 4 day trip.
