Sussex on a shoestring

This is a fantastic 3 day /2 night cycle route taking in the best of Sussex’s coastal and South Downs scenery and sites. You start and finish in Brighton so easy to celebrate at the end of this challenging but exhilarating ride.

Day 1 Brighton to South Downs YHA (31 miles, 50 km)

The route starts by following National Cycle Route 2 (NCR 2) along the coast to the town of Seaford with its expansive seafront and a visit to the famous Seven Sisters Country Park & Friston Forest. After leaving the Park you head inland on Route 2 to the charming Sussex village of Alfriston. After refreshments you join the South Downs Way (SDW) heading west and go up and over Firle Beacon before descending to South Downs YHA at Southease.

Day 2 South Downs YHA to Truleigh Hill YHA – via Lewes (20.4 miles)

From Southease follow the SDW crossing the River Ouse until reaching Housedean Farm. Then join Cycle Route 90 into the historic town of Lewes. You leave Lewes on a well-used bridleway that rejoins the SDW above Plumpton. The rest of the day is cycling on the magnificent SDW passing notable points such as Ditchling Beacon, Jack & Jill Windmills and Devil’s Dyke before reaching Truleigh Hill YHA.

Day 3 Truleigh Hill to Brighton –  via Cissbury Ring (28.2 miles)

From Trulieigh Hill you continue west on the SDW crossing the river Adur before ascending to the mystical Chanctonbury Ring and Cissbury Ring, the largest hill fort in Sussex and has a history dating back over 5,000 years. From Cissbury Ring you descend into the traditional seaside town of Worthing At Worthing Pier you rejoin NCR 2 and head eastwards along the coast back to Brighton via Shoreham.
