Discover Sussex - West

A cycle ride starting in the vibrant city of Brighton that heads westwards along the West Sussex coast to the spectacular Wittering beaches. From there cycle the Saltern’s Way until you reach the historic City of Chichester. On leaving Chichester, head east through rolling countryside, until you reach Arundel with its magnificent 11th century castle dominating the skyline.  From Arundel you take a short train ride north across the Downs to Christ’s Hospital, which is located on the famous long distance Downs Link cycle path. Follow the path to its end in Shoreham-on-Sea and it is a short coastal ride back to Brighton.

Ascent: 4764 feet / 1452 metres
Duration: 3 or 4 days
Start point: Brighton
End point: Brighton

Brighton to bognor regis

This part of the route follows the well-established National Cycle Route 2 (NCR 2) & South Coast Cycle Routes (SCCR) taking you through the coastal towns of Shoreham, Worthing and Littlehampton before reaching the tradition seaside town of Bognor Regis.

Distance 30 Miles

Bognor to chichester

On leaving Bognor on the SCCR you join Route 88 that takes you on country tracks to Pagham Harbour and Sidlesham. Pagham Harbour forms an area of saltmarsh and shallow lagoons and is famous for birdwatching. From Sidlesham you follow quiet roads through the villages of Almodington and Earnley before arriving at the natural and unspoilt sandy beach of West Wittering. From West Wittering follow the Saltern’s Way cycle path that runs adjacent to Chichester Harbour and takes you to the centre of the historical cathedral city of Chichester.

Distance 30 Miles

Chichester to Arundel

Leaving Chichester you head eastward via quiet country lanes and tracks past the villages of Oving, Westergate and Walberton. You then traverse Paines Wood before emerging at the historic town of Arundel. Arundel’s history begins in Roman and Saxon times as an inland port and important market town. The skyline is now dominated by the gothic Arundel Cathedral and majestic Arundel Castle.

Distance 15 miles

Arundel & Christ’s Hospital (23 min by train)

To make the most of your cycling and to avoid some busy roads we propose that you hop on the train for the short journey from Arundel to Christ’s Hospital. This takes you to a lovely long off-road cycle track.

Christ Hospital to Brighton

At Christ’s Hospital you join the famous long distance cycle path that links the North Downs to the South Downs. The Downs Link follows two disused railway lines and crosses the Surrey Hills, the Low Weald, the South Downs and the Coastal Plain. Since the trains departed in the 1960’s the embankments and cuttings have become a green corridor for wildlife and people. At the end of the path in Shoreham you re-join NCR 2 and head along the coast back to Brighton.
